What is a Tablet Metal Detector ?

40 Read Updated:2026-04-03

A Tablet Metal Detector (also called a pharmaceutical metal detector for tablets/capsules) is a high-sensitivity, industry-specific metal detection system designed exclusively for inspecting tablets, capsules, and other small pharmaceutical or nutraceutical products to identify and remove metal contaminants.

Core Purpose

To ensure patient safety by detecting tiny metal particles (from machinery wear, tool breakage, or raw material contamination) in solid oral dosage forms before packaging and distribution.

How It Works (Principle)

It operates on balanced electromagnetic induction:
  1. Emission: A transmitter coil generates a high-frequency, stable alternating magnetic field.
  2. Balanced Reception: Two symmetric receiving coils cancel each other’s signals (output = 0) when no metal is present.
  3. Disturbance: When a tablet with metal passes through, the metal induces eddy currents, disturbing the field.
  4. Detection & Rejection: The imbalance creates a signal; the system triggers an alarm and automatic rejection to remove the defective unit.

Key Features & Specifications

  • Ultra-High Sensitivity: Detects ferrous (Fe) ~0.3–0.5 mm, non-ferrous (Cu, Al) ~0.4 mm, and stainless steel (SUS) ~0.5 mm particles.
  • Design: Typically gravity-fed (falling) or narrow conveyor for small, loose products.
  • Hygiene: 316/304 stainless steel construction, IP65/66/68 waterproof, GMP-compliant, tool-free disassembly for cleaning.
  • Performance: High throughput (50,0000 tablets/hour) with precise, fast rejection.
  • Compliance: Meets FDA 21 CFR Part 11, with audit trails and data logging.
  • Smart Interface: Touchscreen HMI, auto-learn/auto-calibrate, stores 100+ product recipes.

Typical Applications

  • Tablets (round, oval, irregular)
  • Hard/softgel capsules
  • Caplets, pills, and small nutraceuticals
  • Installed post-compression, before blister/packaging.

Why It’s Different from Standard Metal Detectors

  • Narrow aperture/chute optimized for small items.
  • Pharmaceutical-grade hygiene.
  • Extreme sensitivity for micro-particles.
  • FDA/GMP data compliance built-in.
